The CHT (Chittagong Hill Tracts) Commission strongly condemned a brutal attack on Indigenous students and their supporters in Dhaka on 15 January 2025. The incident occurred during a peaceful demonstration organised by Indigenous students in front of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) office, protesting the removal of the term “Indigenous” from educational materials.
The protest was met with violence from extremist and Bengali settler groups, resulting in severe injuries to several participants.
The following day, a group called “Aggrieved Student – Masses” organised a march to protest the attack, but police responded with excessive force, including baton charges and water cannons. The CHT Commission has called for justice and accountability for the perpetrators, emphasising that this attack is part of a systemic culture of impunity affecting Indigenous Peoples across Bangladesh.
The Commission warned that if the Interim Government fails to take immediate action against rising extremism, it risks destabilising the government and undermining its commitment to a diverse and inclusive Bangladesh. The recent violence marks a troubling escalation in attacks against Indigenous activists, raising concerns about the safety and rights of marginalised communities in the country.
