British Member of Parliament Bob Blackman has tabled a motion in the UK Houses of Parliament calling for Bangladesh’s interim government to establish a truth and reconciliation commission and strengthen protections for minority communities.

The Early Day Motion, submitted on 16 July 2025, highlights the ongoing political instability and governance challenges facing Bangladesh following recent constitutional and administrative changes.

Bob Blackman’s motion urges the interim government to prioritise the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission as part of legal and constitutional reforms, hold inclusive elections to restore political order, social harmony, and economic development, introduce constitutional and legal safeguards for minority communities, including reserved parliamentary seats and establish a minority commission to serve as an ombudsperson for minority-related issues.

The motion comes amid what Bob Blackman describes as “political instability and uncertainty” in Bangladesh, where the interim administration’s ad hoc governance structure has created challenges for law and order. The MP specifically highlighted the “very difficult condition” facing minorities, who are experiencing concerns about their safety and security. “The minorities need to be assured of due protection of law and a guarantee for their political rights,” the motion states, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these issues as the interim government undertakes constitutional and administrative reforms.

The parliamentary motion reflects growing international concern about Bangladesh’s political transition and the need for inclusive governance structures that protect all citizens, particularly vulnerable minority communities.
